As we gear up for the Arab League Summit this week, let's first take a moment to review some of the noteworthy reports of last week.
Starting with politics and diplomacy…
Assad was extended an invitation by King Salman of Saudi Arabia to take part in the upcoming thirty-second Arab League summit scheduled to be hosted in Jeddah on May 19th.
The Saudi foreign ministry announced last Tuesday that Saudi Arabia intends to reestablish its diplomatic presence in Syria, marking the resumption of diplomatic relations after a lapse of almost ten years. This decision comes just two days after Syria's readmission into the Arab League.
Iran's finance minister arrived in Jeddah last Thursday, signifying the first official visit by an Iranian representative to Saudi Arabia since the two nations agreed to restore diplomatic ties.
And lastly, a bit about Saudi Aramco…
Last Tuesday, the oil company reported a 19% decline in net profit for the first quarter compared to the previous year, amounting to 119.54 billion riyals ($31.88 billion). The decrease in profit was attributed to the reduction in crude oil prices.
Let's keep an eye on what this week has to offer.
